MOGADISHU, Somalia –Turkey has delivered M48 and M60 Patton main battle tanks to Somalia, bolstering Ankara’s military presence in the Horn of Africa.
Video footage shows the tanks moving through Mogadishu in convoy after being unloaded from a Turkish naval vessel at the city port.
Defense officials said the armored vehicles arrived aboard the Turkish Navy landing ship TCG Sancaktar and were escorted through the city to secure positions.
The tank shipment follows other Turkish deployments. In January, F-16 fighter jets were stationed at Aden Adde International Airport in Somalia.
The jets are reportedly tasked with supporting counter-terrorism operations against al-Shabab and enhancing rapid-response capabilities for the Somali National Army.
Earlier, Ankara delivered three T129 ATAK attack helicopters in 2024 and 2025 under an expanded defense cooperation agreement with Somalia.
Somali pilots completed training programs before the helicopters were transferred, strengthening the army’s ability to conduct close air support operations and counter-insurgency missions.
Turkey’s military assistance began increasing in 2020, starting with Kirpi armored personnel carriers and transport vehicles for the Somali National Army.
Additional shipments between 2021 and 2025 included mine-resistant vehicles, logistical trucks, heavy weapons, ammunition, and command-and-control equipment to enhance Somalia’s capabilities.
Analysts describe Turkey’s engagement as a structured, multi-phase expansion, moving from mobility support to advanced air power and heavy armor deployments.
Observers say the timeline shows Ankara’s strategy to become a long-term defense partner for Somalia, solidifying its role in regional security operations.
