MOGADISHU, Somalia — Turkey has denied reports that it deployed its Russian-made S-400 air defense system to Somalia, saying the system remains within its borders and will not be transferred abroad.
In a statement, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said the advanced air defense system is fully under Ankara’s control and will be used exclusively by the Turkish armed forces.
“There are no plans to deploy the S-400 air defense system abroad,” the ministry said.
Recent media reports had claimed the system was delivered to Somalia.
The S-400, manufactured by Russia, is considered one of the world’s most advanced air defense systems, designed to intercept missiles and hostile aircraft.
Despite rejecting the reports, Turkey said defense cooperation with Somalia continues to expand.
Ankara has in recent years deepened security ties with the Horn of Africa nation and has recently sent military equipment to the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Turkey also has deployed military officers from its air force, navy and army to support cooperation efforts.
Last week, Turkish naval vessels are operating in Somali waters, where they are reportedly helping protect energy exploration activities, construction projects and a satellite facility under development.
