TUNIS, Tunisia — Tunisia’s President Kais Saied secured a landslide reelection victory, winning 90.7% of the vote, as announced by the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) on Monday. The victory comes after a campaign season marked by the imprisonment of political opponents, journalists, and activists.
Saied’s main challenger, businessman Ayachi Zammel, received 7.4% of the vote. Zammel spent much of the campaign season dealing with legal charges related to election offenses. The election saw a turnout of just 28.8%, reflecting significant voter apathy compared to earlier post-Arab Spring elections.
Despite the low turnout, Saied and his supporters celebrated the outcome as a mandate to continue his efforts to eliminate corruption and reform Tunisia’s political system. In his victory speech, Saied reiterated his commitment to “cleanse the country” of corruption.
As the election results were announced, some opposition figures expressed concerns over the country’s political future, with many promising to continue resisting Saied’s leadership. Tunisia, still grappling with economic challenges, now faces uncertainty as it moves into Saied’s second term.
