MOGADISHU, Somalia — Mogadishu’s local government has ordered all schools to hoist the Somali national flag and promote patriotism through structured educational programs.
The Banadir Regional Administration said the flag must be raised correctly and visibly, with immediate implementation required across public and private schools.
“This initiative strengthens civic responsibility and unity among students,” the Banadir Education Directorate said in a statement.
Somalia has long been ravaged by terrorism and clan conflict, with youth now embracing regional or clan-based flags over national identity.
This is the first directive of its kind to make the Somali flag the only symbol officially representing the entire Somali nation.
The policy follows consultations on reinforcing national values in schools, where flags and behavior will now be regularly monitored by inspectors.
Local reaction has been mostly positive. “It’s commendable,” said Abdirahman Mohamed. “Students should learn to respect the country and the flag.”
“This is a commendable step,” said resident Abdirahman Aden Mohamed. “Young people must understand and respect what their national flag represents.”
Ali Omar Ali added, “It’s a good idea, but there’s confusion over the flag’s exact color. Clear guidelines are urgently needed.”
Abdullahi Mohamed said, “This policy is right. Even businesses should fly the national flag. Regional or clan flags should be banned.”
“This shows our youth are learning about Somalia and its flag,” said Ahmed Abdirahman. “That’s a step in the right direction.
”No penalties were announced, but school inspections will begin soon to ensure compliance with the new national flag directive.
