KISMAYO, Somalia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived on Sunday in Kismayo to meet Jubbaland leader Ahmed Madobe for talks.
Madobe, ministers, lawmakers and citizens welcomed President Mohamud. Security was tightened across Kismayo ahead of his arrival by federal and regional forces.
The visit marks the first direct talks between Mohamud and Madobe since last year’s election dispute escalated into armed conflict.
The talks are expected to last two days, focusing on reconciliation and cooperation between Somalia’s federal government and Jubbaland amid political pressure.
Kenyan officials, including Defense Minister and Intelligence Chief Nuuradiin Haji, joined the meeting, showing regional concern over Somalia’s fragile political situation.
President Mohamud, accompanied by intelligence chief Mahad Salad, said he is hopeful for agreements with Puntland and Jubbaland before the 2026 elections.
Last week, Madobe met Puntland’s president and members of the National Salvation Forum in Nairobi, forming the Council for Somalia’s Future.
The outcome of the talks remains uncertain but offers a crucial chance to ease tensions and foster unity within Somalia’s federal system.
