Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region say they are preparing for possible confrontation with the federal government as uncertainty grows.
Puntland’s interior minister, Abdi Hirsi Ali, known as Qarjab, warned the country faces a dark, unpredictable period ahead of May 15 deadline.
He said the term of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is ending, while the federal government seeks a one-year extension under constitution.
Speaking in Garowe, Qarjab urged Puntland residents to stay alert, support leadership and prepare to defend the region if necessary.
“The government we built and sacrificed for has only weeks left,” he said. “We must prepare for whatever may come next.”
He called on citizens to ready weapons for defense, while stressing Puntland does not intend to initiate violence or escalate tensions.
“We are not starting conflict, but we must all be prepared, consult together and reconcile among ourselves,” Qarjab said during speech.
The remarks come amid rising tensions over Somalia’s political transition and disputes surrounding recent constitutional changes approved by parliament.
Separately, Puntland’s fisheries ministry said it will act against Somali nationals and foreign vessels involved in illegal fishing along coastline.
