MOGADISHU, Somalia — The European Union has committed €75 million ($81 million) in new funding to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, maintaining its role as the mission’s leading financial contributor.
With this latest pledge, total EU funding for African Union-led operations in Somalia over roughly 20 years has reached close to €2.8 billion.
Bankole Adeoye, the African Union commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, said the additional resources would enhance mission capabilities and back efforts aimed at strengthening security and governance in Somalia.
He also commended countries contributing troops for their continued role in stabilization efforts.
Javier Niño Pérez, who heads the EU delegation to the African Union, said the funding demonstrates the bloc’s ongoing support for African-led peace initiatives.
He also noted that Somalia’s security remains a key factor for stability across the broader region.
The EU has consistently supported AU missions in Somalia through financial aid and logistical backing, as part of wider international efforts to tackle insecurity and promote long-term state-building.
