MOGADISHU, Somalia— Somalia condemned Israel’s plan to appoint a diplomatic representative to Somaliland, sparking a sharp dispute with the self-declared republic.
Somalia’s foreign ministry said the move violates its sovereignty and territorial integrity, insisting Somaliland remains part of Somalia under international law and recognition.
“Somalia rejects any attempt to recognize parts of its territory,” the statement said, urging Israel to reverse the decision immediately.
The ministry warned the move could undermine progress on state-building, reconciliation and security, and called on global partners to support its unity.
Somaliland rejected Somalia’s claims, saying it is a sovereign state independent since 1960 and not subject to authority from Mogadishu authorities.
“Somaliland’s diplomatic engagements are sovereign decisions,” the statement said, defending its right to conduct relations without external approval or interference.
Officials in Hargeisa said Somaliland has maintained stability, democracy and security cooperation, contrasting its governance with Somalia’s reliance on international support.
The dispute shows longstanding tensions over Somaliland’s status, with Somalia asserting unity while Somaliland continues seeking international recognition as an independent state.
