MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia is no longer among the world’s 10 most dangerous countries, according to the 2025 Global Peace Index.
The report shows Somalia now ranks 14th among the least peaceful countries, improving from 6th last year after significant security developments.
Compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the index credits Somalia’s progress to government efforts in stabilizing major regions, including the capital.
Somalia now ranks higher than countries like Russia and North Korea, reflecting notable changes in its internal security situation over recent years.
“This improvement is due to strong collaboration between Somalia’s armed forces, civilians, and international allies,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The ministry called the report a victory for the Somali people, recognizing years of work to combat Al-Shabaab and restore public safety.
Government officials pledged to continue strengthening national security and maintaining the country’s path toward peace and long-term political and economic stability.
The report also noted progress in nearby Ethiopia, which climbed five spots to 138th, while Sudan and South Sudan showed minor improvements.
The Global Peace Index ranks 163 countries using indicators like political stability, conflict levels, crime rates, and degree of militarization.
