MOGADISHU, Somalia — The United States has reaffirmed its support for Somalia following talks between Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and the US chargé d’affaires to Somalia, Justin Davis.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Security and counterterrorism efforts were a key part of the discussions, with Somali officials saying progress has been made through close cooperation with international partners.

Mr Hamza briefed the US envoy on recent security improvements, operations against extremist groups and government efforts to stabilise areas reclaimed from militants. He thanked Washington for its role in training and equipping Somalia’s security forces.

The prime minister also stressed the importance of removing armed groups from agricultural areas to help Somalia achieve food security and attract investment.

For his part, Mr Davis praised what he described as progress by the Somali government in security, politics and preparations for public elections.

He said the United States would continue to support Somalia through security assistance, backing for its armed forces and humanitarian aid, as authorities work to deliver relief to communities affected by drought.

The meeting also addressed the humanitarian situation, with discussions on how to support millions of people impacted by ongoing drought across the country.
