MOGADISHU – Four former Somali officials announced their resignation from the opposition Forum during a closed-door meeting held Saturday in Mogadishu.

Former PM Omar Abdirashid, ex-Speakers Sharif Hassan and Mursal, and ex-Minister Dahir Gelle said they plan to register official political parties soon.

Reliable sources said the move was calculated, as the group seeks influence ahead of proposed one-person-one-vote elections in Somalia.

The National Electoral Commission reopened voter and party registration Saturday, according to documents seen by Hortabin Media.

Analysts say the exits weaken the opposition bloc and deepen divisions within an already fragmented coalition challenging President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s political dominance.

Sources revealed the defectors had recent contact with President Mohamud and may be aligning with him before electoral reforms.

Experts say the shift could realign Somalia’s political map, bolstering the government as opposition factions struggle to stay unified and relevant.

President Mohamud has insisted on universal suffrage despite insecurity, political rifts and logistical challenges.

Prominent critics including Sheikh Sharif, Khaire, Roble and Abdishakur remain opposed to President Mohamud’s recent electoral reforms.

In recent comments, President Mohamud said those inciting unrest would be “crushed underfoot,” escalating tensions with rival political leaders.

One Forum member said the resignations felt like betrayal and would significantly weaken their influence during a crucial political turning point.

The National Salvation Forum, formed in 2021 to oppose delayed elections, now faces collapse as President Mohamud strengthens its grip on power.

Somalia’s political future remains uncertain as opposition leaders regroup and the President Mohamud moves forward with his electoral roadmap.
