MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday inaugurated a new military intelligence facility in the capital, Mogadishu.

The new headquarters will house the Somali National Army’s Reconnaissance and Intelligence Command, and is equipped with modern technology to strengthen national defense and intelligence coordination.

President Mohamud said the facility reflects the government’s commitment to building strong security institutions and improving the nation’s ability to counter internal and external threats.

He added that the technology installed will enhance operational planning, intelligence gathering, and battlefield awareness for the Somali National Army and defense leadership.

The inauguration came a day after Somali forces and allied fighters reportedly killed at least 60 Al-Shabaab militants during operations in Ceel-Dheer.

Senior Al-Shabaab commanders were said to be among those killed, and bodies of the fighters were later displayed at the frontlines.

After opening the facility, President Mohamud toured other Defense Ministry departments and received updates on recent military gains across Galgaduud and Lower Shabelle.

He praised the Defense Ministry and Somali National Army for their efforts, calling recent battlefield success a sign of national unity and resilience.

The federal government has renewed its campaign against Al-Shabaab, rearming troops and reinforcing frontline units with support from local community defense forces.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-linked extremist group, has waged a violent insurgency in Somalia for over a decade, seeking to impose its version of Islamic law.
