Angolan President Joao Lourenco secured a second term in office Monday after he was declared the winner of the country’s most vehemently contested election in its democratic history.

The official results from the National Electoral Commission showed MPLA party won 51.17% of the ballot against 43.95% for the main opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita).

However, Unita leader Adalberto Costa Junior has already rejected provisional results, calling for an immediate prop and an international panel to review the vote count.

Lourenc’s victory extends the MPLA’s decades-long rule in the oil-rich African country. Many Angolans praise Lourenco for his far-reaching reforms in the fight against corruption and financial transparency.
